The 2013 South Western Sydney Student Representative Council Conference - Fairfield RSL
On Friday 15 March 2013, 115 Students from 50 secondary schools across the South Western Sydney education region converged at the Fairfield RSL for the annual regional secondary student representative council conference. Students enjoyed a jam-packed, high energy day of team building activities, guest speakers and leadership workshops.
The theme for the 2013 conference was 'REPRESENT!' - a message that encourages students and school SRC's to consider their core business and asks conference participants to consider critical questions for all SRC's such as;
What do SRC's spend their time doing?
Who do SRC's represent?
How do SRC's connect to school decision making?
How are SRC's recognised within the school?
How efficient and effective are SRC's?
The conference was planned and coordinated by the 2012/13 regional student leadership team who did a fantastic job of planning and delivering an engaging and meaningful agenda. The day began with the regional team leading the participants through some entertaining ice-breaker activities that allowed students to gain comfort and have some laughs amid the big crowd. Students were then allocated working groups, or 'colour groups' where there were led through the agenda and expectations of the day.
Guest speaker Katie Pitsis engaged the conference particpants through a high energy interative presentation. Katie spoke on the importance of self belief and positive attitude as well as some very personal and moving messages on bullying and the importance of standing up in the fight against injustice. Katie also followed up her key note address with a series of workshops that ran paralell to the brilliant team building workshops presented by Rising Generations.
The afternoon session of the conference saw particpants engaged in discussions on student mental health with the aim of identifying ways that SRC's could be proactive in supporting positive mental health of students inour schools. All in all the day was a wonderful success and students left with bundles of information, ideas and inspiration to take back to their school SRC's.
Special thanks goes to the 2012/13 regional student leadership team;
